Colorado KIDS COUNTY 2017 Presentation Re-Cap
The Early Childhood Advisory Council hosted the Colorado Children’s Campaign at our December Council Meeting as they presented data from KIDS COUNT 2017, with a specific focus on Larimer County. It was an excellent presentation that shed light on our community’s children and families’ diverse situations and how they compare to the rest of the State.
This year, the Colorado Children’s Campaign disaggregated their data by race and ethnicity, to get a more complete picture of how children are doing across Larimer County and the state. They also spent time looking at the underlying causes for some of the disparities. For example, “redlining” was a discriminatory practice that started in the 1930s and persisted for decades, which denied home ownership to many people of color (see KIDS COUNT in Colorado 2017, page 17, for a more detailed discussion of this practice). The impact of this discriminatory practice persists today, as home ownership is a key source of equity for families, and allows them to pass wealth on to their children. Inability to develop equity in a home is a factor in generational poverty.
